2012 Pedigree Notes
By BILL OPPENHEIM
Looking at SAKHEE’s top twenty runners to date, three of the major sire lines certainly stand out as having done best with him on the broodmare sire side: Nasrullah, Northern Dancer, and Mr. Prospector. This is interesting as he himself is Nasrullah-line (by Riverman’s son, Bahri) and already has two crosses of Northern Dancer, through Bahri’s damsire, Nijinsky, and his own damsire, Sadler’s Wells. Nevertheless, even one of his top twenty is out of a Barathea mare, so inbred to Sadler’s Wells!
Seven of SAKHEE’s top twenty are out of Nasrullah-line mares, especially Bold Ruler (two, including $3.3-million earner Presvis, out of a mare by Never So Bold); Grey Sovereign (two, including the 2011 Classic winner and dual Group 1 placed juvenile Tin Horse, out of a Kendor mare); Mill Reef (two), and Blushing Groom. The Mill Reef angle is especially interesting as it involves inbreeding to Never
Bend (also sire of Riverman), which has been a successful mix with other stallions; also, of course, SAKHEE being out of a Sadler’s Wells mare means Mill Reef is a natural mix for him for that reason also.
Another nine of SAKHEE’s top twenty are out of other Northern Dancer-line mares, especially Unfuwain (two); Icecapade; Danzig (three); Storm Bird (two); and the Barathea mare already mentioned. Both of SAKHEE’s two impressive Group performers toward the end of 2011, Royal
Rock (like Presvis, a 2011 Group winner at seven, from SAKHEE’s first crop!) and the Gr.1 Jean-Luc Lagardere third Salure, represent this cross.
Though these two sire line groupings account for 16 of SAKHEE’s twenty top horses to date, he has also worked over Mr. Prospector, which he won’t have seen much of but which in theory he should work very well with (and has, when he’s had the opportunity); and a couple of now-obscure
lines, namely Ribot and In Reality. I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to try other Native Dancer lines besides Mr. Prospector with SAKHEE, nor to try other non-Phalaris lines, of which Ribot and In Reality are examples.
To summarize, for SAKHEE: definitely Nasrullah (especially Bold Ruler, Grey Sovereign, and Blushing Groom); more Northern Dancer; and Mr. Prospector-line mares. Ribot and In Reality (Warning) are two other lines which have worked.
