Shadwell Estate
Shadwell Estate Company Ltd was purchased in 1984 and includes 6 separate studs.
The prestigious Nunnery Stud was built in 1987 to take 6 stallions and their visiting mares. An impressive office was also developed on site to house Sheikh Hamdan’s British based breeding and racing headquarters, as well as to co-ordinate Shadwell’s worldwide bloodstock operation with its links in Ireland, USA, France, South Africa and Australia.
Snarehill Stud was developed as a rehabilitation centre for Sheikh Hamdan’s string of racehorses in England, whilst Elmswell Stud, Salsabil Stud and Beech House Stud are each home to a number of his elite band of broodmares and their progeny.
Shadwell’s UK interests also include Arabian racehorses reared to race in Europe and the United Arab Emirates. The Arab Stallion operation is based at Melton Paddocks on Shadwell Estate.

MELTON PADDOCKS & SNAREHILL STUDAssistant Manager: The original studs were Melton Paddocks and Snarehill Stud. Shortly after purchase, Melton Paddocks was modernised and refurbished and is now used as an Arabian horse stud. Its principal stallion at present is Bengali d’Albret who, as well as being a champion racehorse, has become one of the leading sires in the UK over the last four years. Visit the Arabian Stallions website >> Snarehill Stud, meanwhile, was developed as a rehabilitation centre for Sheikh Hamdan’s growing string of racehorses in England. It is here that special care can be given to an injured or, indeed, jaded horse enabling it to return to full training and racing as quickly as possible. |
ELMSWELL PARK STUDAssistant Manager: Elmswell Park Stud is used as a base for Shadwell’s private mares. After foaling, the mares either stay at Elmswell Park, if visiting a Nunnery Stud Stallion, or if they are visiting a stallion based in the Newmarket area, they go to our Beech House Stud in Newmarket. |
SALSABIL STUDAssistant Manager: Much like Elmswell Park, Salsabil is where mares are cared for prior to foaling. Once they have foaled, they can stay until they return to Ireland with their foals in the late summer. The tranquil surroundings of Salsabil are ideal for both mares and foals, particularly at the early stages of the latter’s development and growth.
